Report: Government control may disrupt Runet’s stability

MOSCOW, Jan 14 (PRIME) -- A transfer of control over Internet traffic to the Russian communications service could threaten stability of online connections, business daily Vedomosti reported late on January 13, quoting autonomous non-commercial organization Digital Economy on a bill on management of the local segment of the Internet, the Runet.

Aliya Samigullina, a spokeswoman for Deputy Prime Minister Maxim Akimov, said the government had received the organization’s opinion about the bill submitted in December 2018 to the State Duma, the parliament’s lower house.

The document authorizes the communications watchdog to set the rules of Internet traffic routing for local operators and control of their fulfilment.

The service will also take care so that the least possible volume of inter-Russian traffic transits through foreign nodes.
